Travel directions: Take the A593 (Ambleside to Coniston) and just under two miles north of Coniston is a narrow road on the right, signposted to Hodge Close. Follow this for about two miles until it opens out into a huge car park.
Hodge Close Quarry is a massive excavation of light green coloured slate, sheer-sided and unfenced, with an original worked depth from ground level of about 100m (300 feet). The 150 feet deep face is a favourite with abseilers, while the 150 feet deep flooded workings which extend below the surface are popular with divers.

Hodge Close offers some amazing views of its massive water filled cavern, from both the top and bottom. You can access the cavern at the bottom and have a proper explore of the caves.
Hodge close is an old green slate quarry in the Tilberthwaite Valley, near Langdale. It was first quarried in the 19 th century right up until the 1960s. Initially, it was an open pit with levels and chambers coming off of it at various junctures.

Oct 02, 2018· Hodge close is a great place to visit, but very dangerous if not treated with care. You can access the quarry by a steep path, treacherous in the wet. Wear sensible footwear.... then enter the other quarry thru a large gap in the rocks.
